The Commewijne District is known for its many plantations and is located east of Paramaribo on the other side of the Suriname River. You cross over to Commewijne via the famous Wijdenbosch bridge, where you have a wonderful view of both Commewijne and Paramaribo. The Peperpot Tour is a wonderful combination of history, nature and a meeting with the inhabitants of this area: the Javanese. You will pass workers’ homes and plantations and with a bit of luck get to see species like monkeys, giant lizards and unusual birds. Upon arrival at Plantation Peperpot you can take a look at the two plantation homes: the coffee shed from 1808 and the coffee and cocoa factory, which was in production until 1996. Along the way there are opportunities to make several stops.
