Frederiksdorp is a former 18th-century coffee and cocoa plantation. The first owner was a German, Johan Friedrich Knöffel, to whom the plantation owes its name to date. The history of Frederiksdorp begins with colonization of “The Wild Coast”, slavery and plantation, its abolition from 1863 to 1873, the immigration of Asian contract workers, and results in the development into a peaceful, friendly area. The tranquility, friendliness, the omnipresent historical heritage and beautiful nature make the Commewijne one of Suriname’s finest districts. “After sour it sweet” is an old saying in the Commewijne.

The Hindustani and Javanese contract workers came to Suriname from 1873 to 1939 and decided to continue living were assigned a piece of land. Their descendants live from small-scale agriculture, animal husbandry and fishing. Fishing is often done on the Suriname and Commewijne river, off the coast and in the swamps.

The historical heritage of Frederiksdorp consists of a police station with seven houses that are all furnished as accommodation. There are accommodation on the two authentic plantation houses. The prison has been transformed into a restaurant and kitchen.

The surrounding plantations in the Commewijne district, such as Peperpot, Meerzorg, Mariënburg, Katwijk, Spieringshoek, Alliance, Bakkie, Mariënbosch, Johan and Margaretha, and Rust en Werk – all have their own story.

Sea turtles:

From February to August, the Atlantic sea beaches of Suriname are the domain of the giant tortoise. From Plantage Frederiksdorp we sail either to the beach of Braampunt or we sail through a canal of 20 km through the swamp to the beach of Matapica. When we arrive there we look for the sea turtles. We keep enough distance not to disturb the turtles when laying, but we get close enough to see the wonderful process. An impressive experience.
